  • I decided to teach the kids how to fish this summer, despite having little experience myself. Three hours in, my daughter caught the only fish of the day, and hasn't let me forget it since.
  • I offered to host Labor Day this year since everyone else had hosted a holiday recently. By the time I finished shopping, I'd bought enough food for double our actual guest list, out of pure anxiety.
  • We decorated the house for Halloween earlier than usual this year, going all out with fog machines and fake spiders. A neighbor asked if we were running a haunted house business now, and I've decided to take that as a compliment.
  • I tried to grow a vegetable garden for the first time, following every tip I could find online. The tomatoes thrived beautifully. The zucchini, on the other hand, took over half the yard before I finally intervened.
  • My daughter wanted to help decorate the Christmas tree entirely by herself this year, no adult input allowed. Every ornament ended up clustered on the bottom three branches, and it remained that way, proudly, the whole season.
  • We decided to host a big Fourth of July barbecue for the neighborhood, expecting a modest turnout of close friends. Word spread further than intended, and we ended up feeding nearly the whole street off two small grills.
