  • We hosted the neighborhood block party this year, expecting maybe twenty people. Word spread further than planned, and by evening we'd fed closer to sixty, using every folding chair in a four-house radius.
  • We decided to host Thanksgiving at our place for the first time. I researched turkey brining techniques for weeks. The turkey came out great. I forgot to actually turn the oven on for the side dishes until an hour before dinner.
  • We tried a new hiking trail as a family, expecting an easy two-mile loop based on the map. It turned into a five-mile detour, one blister, and a very long car ride home in mostly silence.
  • We carved pumpkins as a family this year, each of us attempting our own design. Mine looked like a lopsided ghost. My daughter's, drawn by an eight-year-old, was somehow more technically impressive.
  • I finally tackled the garage this spring, determined to actually park a car in there for once. Six hours and three donation bags later, I discovered a tool set I'd bought and completely forgotten I owned.
  • We planned a low-key New Year's Eve at home with the kids, expecting an early night. Somehow it turned into a full living room dance party that lasted until well past midnight, kids included.
